AskDefine | Define triaxial

Extensive Definition

A triaxial ellipsoid is an ellipsoid with all three axes having positive lengths, which cannot be neglected as insignificant. In other words, it is an ellipsoid with positive volume. On a triaxial ellipsoid, there are three diameters, generally referred to as equatorial, polar and side.
A triaxial spheroid is a triaxial ellipsoid with two of the axes having the equal length.

The word triaxial is used to emphasize that all axes have significant length. It is often used in astronomy, to describe the shape of galaxies or other objects.
